The only predictable aspect to the weather in Yellowstone National Park is to expect the unexpected.
Due to the mountainous terrain and high elevation, parts of Yellowstone can get snow during any month of the year. Snow in August? It has happened!
The simple message is to check the Yellowstone Park weather forecast and prepare for weather that will probably be colder. That way you will be ready for whatever the finicky Yellowstone weather brings your way.
On the flip side, some of the most spectacular Yellowstone weather you can experience is during September. The nights are usually cool, but the days are usually warm and sunny. The early frosts have brought color to the autumn leaves and the elk begin gathering up their harems. If you get the chance, definitely plan a trip to Yellowstone during the fall.
A majority of Yellowstone National Park visitors arrive during the summer months. You can expect daytime temperatures in the 70s and sometimes into the 80s at the lower elevations. Nighttime temperatures usually dip into the 50s and mid-40s, and at higher elevations drop below freezing. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer months.
Winter is a beautiful time in Yellowstone, but it also one of the harshest. Temperatures often range from zero to 20F during the day. Nighttime temperatures are often below zero. The coldest record low temperature for Yellowstone was -66F. Most of Yellowstone is covered with snow during the winter months with over 10 feet of snow common at the higher elevations.
The weather in Yellowstone National Park during the spring and fall months is somewhat similar. Daytime temperatures range from the 30s into the 60s and drop to the teens and single digits at night. It is common to get snowstorms during both the spring and fall months. Yellowstone Park comes alive during the spring when the newborn animals are born and active. One of the best times to visit is during the first week of June when the elk calves are being born.
Remember to always be prepared for the worst weather conditions during the time you plan on visiting Yellowstone. We recommed that you have good rain gear, warm jackets, hats, gloves, and comfortable footwear.
