The abundance and diversity of wildlife that live in Yellowstone Ecosystem is unique in North America, especially when it comes to the large mammals.
Two charismatic wildlife species that visitors to Yellowstone Park want to observe are grizzly bears and wolves.
It is not uncommon to observe either one of these species in certain areas of Yellowstone Park at certain times of the year. If you know where to look early in the morning or right before dark, you can usually spot wolves or a grizzly bear.
Their are a lot of people that spend time watching wildlife with binoculars and spotting scopes. If you aren't that good at spotting wildlife by yourself, then watch for people pulled off along side the road that are watching widlife. Most people are very friendly and enjoy showing other visitors to Yellowstone the wildlife they are watching.
One of the best places to observe both wolves and grizzly bears is in the Lamar Valley. This large open river valley makes for great wildlife viewing. In some rare instances visitors are actually able to observe interactions between elk, bison, wolves and grizzly bears.
Several pullouts along Hayden Valley also offer you the opportunity to watch for wolves and grizzly bears.
Be sure to watch the slopes of Mt. Washburn for grizzly bears digging for roots and ground squirrels.
If you are extremely lucky, you might even observe grizzly bears and wolves interacting like in this photograph and short video.
